Are Pizza Box Bad for Recycling?

15 Feb 2024

When we are talking about recycling, are greasy pizza boxes not good for recycling? We should first look at how paper and cardboard are recycled.

The heating process used for glass, metal, and plastic recycling can burn off the food residue, but recycling paper is another story. Since paper doesn't get heated during the recycling process. The grease and oil in the paper will combine with the pulp and ruin the whole batch of paper. After that, the batch is then soaked with soapy water and chemicals to remove things like ink, tapes, and glue. After that, its sent to mix with water to create a slurry. Once it is in the slurry, the oil will float to the top and it will be impossible to remove the oil from the paper-making process, and the whole batch is wasted.

To conclude, grease and oil are the worst contaminants in paper recycling, so please cut off the oily bits before recycling the paper!
